During one of the coldest spells of this winter I had the pleasure of spending two days with Naomi and Heather at their art retreat in Waihi Beach. This was to be the most relaxing and indulgent two days I have had.
I travelled to Waihi Beach with my friend Trish from Auckland stopping at The Woodcutters Cafe for lunch, an easy attractive drive. We arrived at Naomis’ modern bach where a fire was going and afternoon tea was ready. While enjoying a cuppa and a piece of ginger slice Naomi and Heather talked over their ideas for the art weekend, so we would produce a painting in just one day!! Trish and I rather doubted this as neither of us had done any art since school days, we would see. That afternoon we had a leisurely stroll on Waihi Beach followed by a gorgeous dinner and we didnt have to lift a finger! Such a treat.
The next morning after a cup of tea in bed and a fabulous breakfast we headed off to the beach to do some sketching, encouraged by Heather and Naomi we both sketched a scene we would then have a go at painting.
Heather did a demonstration of art techniques and showed how quickly and easily you could come up with a painting. And then we were let loose on our own art works. Naomi and Heather were so encouraging and really made it seem possible to paint and have lots of fun while doing it. I learnt so much and actually did two paintings using both sketches and photographs as a reference. As I said to them its not often as an adult you have fun and this was what it was, there was also no time for self criticism as they were constantly saying how great your painting was!
We went to a local restaurant for dinner which lovely, lots of laughs and excellent food then back home for Naomis’ delicious dessert and an early night. The sea air, good food and not lifting a finger catching up with us.
It was with great reluctance we headed back to Auckland after another superb breakfast, I could do with this indulgence on a regular basis.
Naomi and Heathers art retreat is a relaxed supported environment for the new artist or the expert just wanting to be waited on while they enjoy their art. The bach is modern but filled with retro touches so it feels like the quintessential Kiwi bach, comfy beds and pillows and the best shower head ever are the icing on the cake!
Thanks to Naomi and Heather for the experience and I certainly hope to repeat it.
